GPB News's ethics and editorial standards require fair, balanced and unbiased reporting and independence from the State of Georgia and political parties, and they bar its journalists from expressing political views.
Evidence
- Copy of GPB's Ethics and Editorial Standards in Tampere University's EthicNet database of journalism codes, last updated there in 2018. “GPB News broadcasts unbiased and accurate reporting”
- GPB's About page: mission and values of the statewide PBS and NPR network; it states no political position. “diverse programming that enriches Georgians of all ages”
Limits of this rating
- No clear direction means GPB's standards document no political direction; it is not a finding that coverage is balanced.
- The standards were found only in a 2018 copy on EthicNet, not on GPB's own site. GPB is run by a Georgia state commission whose members the governor appoints, and we found no law protecting its editorial independence.
