The Times editorial board endorsed the Democratic nominee for president in 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020, and its recent editorials back keeping the federal EV tax credit and building homeless housing. Owner Patrick Soon-Shiong blocked a 2024 endorsement, and the paper said it would not endorse for president going forward.
Evidence
- The Times editorial board's 2020 endorsement of the Democratic ticket. “editorial board endorses the Democratic ticket: Joe Biden for president” (Los Angeles Times editorial board)
- The Times editorials page (labeled Voices): editorials to keep the federal EV tax credit (Dec. 2024), to build homeless housing and keep a street-safety redesign, and a 2026 call to vote no on Prop. 40.
- American Presidency Project list of Times presidential endorsements: Republicans through 1972, none from 1976 to 2004, Democrats from 2008 to 2020, and none in 2024 after the owner ordered no endorsement.
- Boston Globe report, October 2024: the Los Angeles Times said it would not endorse in 2024 or in any presidential election going forward.
Limits of this rating
- The owner blocked the board's 2024 presidential endorsement and the paper has stopped presidential endorsements, so its direction may change.
- Before 1976 the Times endorsed Republicans for president; this rating covers the record since 2008.
- Covers the editorial board only; the newsroom is run separately and is not covered by this rating.
