The Herald editorial board endorsed the Democratic nominee for president in 2008, 2012 and 2016, and made no endorsement in 2020 under a McClatchy policy. In 2026 it declined to endorse for U.S. Senate, faulting the Republican for backing Trump's most extreme policies and the Democrat for her Democratic Socialists ties.

Limits of this rating
- The board now includes a writer from conservative politics and says it does not endorse by party; its 2024 presidential choice was not checked.
- Covers the editorial board only; the newsroom is run separately and is not covered by this rating.
- A record-based rating describes the board's politics, not its accuracy or every editorial.
