Voice of America
VOA's charter, signed into law in 1976, requires it to represent America rather than any single segment of American society and to present a balanced picture of American thought. VOA also publishes separate editorials that reflect the views of the US government.
Evidence
- VOA's Mission, Firewall and Charter page: the 1976 charter, the statutory firewall, and VOA's place in the US Agency for Global Media. “VOA will represent America, not any single segment of American society”
- VOA's editorials site, labeled as reflecting the views of the US government; recent editorials cover foreign policy. “Reflecting the Views of the U.S. Government”
Limits of this rating
- No clear direction means VOA's charter documents no domestic political direction; it is not a finding that coverage is balanced.
- VOA is run by a US government agency, its charter also requires it to present US government policies, and its labeled editorials speak for the government of the day; this rating covers the domestic left-right axis only.
